On Oct 7, 2015, we had Melanie Leung-Shea, founder of Helpwise, introduce to us the topic of Parenting With A Helper: Managing The Tricky Angle Between the parent-child-helper relationship. She covered the following areas.
If we were worried about the habits and parenting skills of our helper when left alone, she offered some role modeling time combined with some child minding apps that may ease our trust issues. She stressed the need to show our children the kind of respect towards our helper that we would want our children to give us as parents. This way the child begins to accept the helper as an authority in her life. And id we feel even a tinge of jealousy towards the closeness achieved between our helper and child, one of the positive views she offered was how much a child is better made secure in the knowledge she has a loving individual at her side even without our presence.
The angles we explored were many, much more than this blog can cover. The insights acknowledged some tricky psychological areas and it was clear that ultimately there were a lot of personal choices we had to be cognizant of in order to be intentional about those choices in order to create a supportive atmosphere at home.
She promised a judgment-free learning environment and, indeed, she was supportive and open-minded the whole way. Helpwise does other workshops for employers who would like to improve their management skills with their home employees. If you'd like to contact her to join one of her workshops you can reach her through Helpwise at www.helpwise.com.hk.
